Port
City Architecture
Founded in 1739, Wilmington
was historically North Carolina's largest town and busiest port. Located
on the Cape Fear River, it was also a prominent rail center. Much of
the old town has been preserved through the efforts of the Historic
Wilmington Foundation and documented through the research materials
at the New Hanover County Public Library. Featured here is the Historic
Plaque Program, where preservation and education come together to
showcase the city's architectural, social, cultural, business and family
history.
